Over the weekend I winterized the front porch of my townhome. The geraniums are still out but the other flowers are toast, so to speak. The geraniums will need to be covered this week because of a frost warning but I’m not quite ready to move them indoors. I bring them in for the winter in order to help save for the next season. One of my geraniums is 4 years old – well parts of it are anyway.

The next two baskets are the Flower Pot (block 3) and the Flower Basket (block 4).

The Flower Pot is very scrappy and you’ll need 15, ½ square triangle units and 4 solid 2½ inch squares, 3 for the basket (orange) and one for the lower right hand corner, shown in the photo as grey. Also cut 2, 6½ X 2½ inch strips (grey). To make the ½ square triangle units cut one light and one dark 3 inch square. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and stitch ¼ inch on either side of the line. Cut apart, press and trim to 2½ inches. Put the units together in rows of 4 beginning with the top row – 4, ½ square triangle units. The bottom row will be the 6½ X 2½ inch strip plus one ½ square triangle unit. Then sew the right side unit together using the remaining 6½ X 2½ inch strip, ½ square triangle unit and the grey 2½ inch square and sew this unit to the right side. How easy is that?

The Flower Basket is a little different. Here are the cutting requirements for the Flower Basket. Consider fabric 1 to be the red.

Sewing directions:

1. Construct 10, 2½ inch square triangle units and 1, 4½ inch square triangle unit.
2. Construct 2 units using the 1½ X 2½ inch strips and the 1½ inch squares. Sew these units to the 8 X 2½ inch strips.
3. Construct 1 unit using a 2½ inch square (fabric 1) and the 1½ inch square (fabric 2). Sew this to one of the units in step 2 above.

Putting the block together: Begin with the 4½ inch square. Add the ½ square triangle units on the left. Sew together the two top rows of four squares and sew those onto the block. Add the bottom row and then the right side.

I hope you are learning construction techniques and that you will soon be able to draft your own blocks. If you get stuck, you can print out the block, cut the pieces apart and work from there. If you get really stuck email me, kathy@sugarloafdesigns.com. Stay warm - as I'm writing this it is 28°.
